John Starck, Jr. is President and CEO of Showcase Kitchens – a design firm which proudly traces its roots back to 1933. A kitchen and bath designer for more than 25 years, John is board certified and an active member of NKBA and NARI. Starck's designs have won national and regional awards and have been featured in numerous publications and trade literature.
With over 2,000 completed kitchen projects, Starck has a solid reputation for carefully incorporating architectural details while masterfully blending form with function. His passion for design excellence makes Starck one of the nation's most well-respected designers amongst his peers and has transformed Showcase Kitchens to a design firm that is exclusively by referral. John resides in Manhasset, NY and participates in numerous charitable organizations as well as serving as a board member of a local Architectural review board. He is happily married with 3 children.
Q&A with John Starck, Jr.
Where do you find design inspiration?
I am inspired by all the elements of design working well together in visual symmetry. With new projects, I try to allow the client to drive the inspiration. Hopefully they’ve come to me with examples of their aesthetic. If not, I help them discern what they want via their color preferences, formal vs. relaxed design, monochromatic or patterned schemes, luxury vs. easy to care for materials, etc. Other things such as family make-up, heirloom items they wish to incorporate, access to natural light may also play a part in the design. Then we work together to bring these concepts into harmony.
How do you approach the design process?
Initially, I break down the core functional nucleus of the homeowners' needs by brainstorming with the primary cook. All my creations start as a hand sketch so there are no questions as to the direction we’re going. Hand rendering gives a very clear and beautiful idea of what the end result will be. Once the concepts are formulated, full CAD engineering for precision commences.
What makes your aesthetic stand out amongst other designers?
I have complete diversity in style formation. My designs go from old world classicism to sleek modernism. My range and ability to work outside the box is what makes my decisions stand out.
What is the greatest value you provide to your clients?
Harmonizing all aesthetic preferences to achieve a cohesive style. Also, here at Showcase Kitchens, we take pride in the post-installation customer service calls. We want to stay on top of the little things that may need to be tweaked here and there. When our clients are express joy with their kitchens after many years, we know we have succeeded.
