Q&A with Susan Marinello
Where do you find design inspiration?
Inspiration comes from many sources; initially from the architecture of the home, the setting, the surrounding natural views, and most of all (and to me most importantly) from the client who will work in the kitchen. I explore many angles to find my start point, which always results in something interesting I can latch onto.
How do you approach the design process? We start the design process collaboratively. It is truly a research-explore-discover phase where we learn, discuss and edit. It’s really all about hunting and gathering thoughts, concepts and ideas and distilling down to one main idea. We are always testing against our rule to 'keep it simple'.
What is the greatest value you provide your client?
Without a doubt our greatest added value is an enhanced quality of life - on a daily basis. People feel better in spaces that are thoughtfully designed. Good design changes lives - and yes, after all the human benefits, there is an added dollar benefit as well.
What does the Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest mean to you?
Sub-Zero and Wolf are, without a doubt, my trusted and (always) preferred brand. You are a pillar in our industry that stands for highest quality, forward-thinking innovation, high-touch customer service and, very importantly, made in America. As a business owner I know we share similar company values, and for me, to be associated and aligned with your company is the highest compliment personally and professionally.
What are some of the current design trends?
I try to stay away from trends unless they are about technology or efficiency - I believe people are more mindful today about the quality of their food, how their food is prepared and the equipment used to prepare their meals. I know this is true. I have seen it grow in my practice. Any trends that drive design are focused around the efficiency and healthfulness of cooking.
Where do you see kitchen design going in the next 5 years?
My vision for kitchen design in 5 years would mean we designers have more size and shape options for appliances. This is already happening, but I hope the choices continue to expand.
