Dalton Kitchen

Regional Award Winner KDC 2010-12

"The sophisticated homeowner of this kitchen made an explicit request for ‘the unique,’ and immediately the challenges began. As we discussed floor plan possibilities, she mentioned that her home is an exact replica of the historic George Wythe house in Williamsburg, Virginia. How was I to integrate a kitchen ‘of the moment,’ into a traditional home? That challenge was diffused upon discovery that the house was not filled with 18th century antiques, but instead an eclectic collection of furnishings and original art. The overall neutral palette of the house and one painting in particular inspired the finishes for the kitchen. Pale-planked pear perimeter cabinets and the counterpoint white rift oak island are topped with dark concrete slabs. A massive chimney that backed up to the kitchen from the dining room lent itself to a shallow stretch of tall cabinets to the right of Wolf’s E Series ovens and a Sub-Zero 736TCI. The juxtaposition to the open shelves on one side of the room is offset by mirrored tall cabinets on the other, which keep the space from feeling one-sided. At completion, the homeowner expressed pleasure that the kitchen “feels like another room of the house” and not just the kitchen."
