CORALLES CONTEMPORARY

Regional Award Winner KDC 2013-14

Art is everywhere in New Mexico, whether it’s a beautiful earth-toned pot at a roadside stand or an explosion of color in a Canyon Road gallery. So it’s not surprising to find that it extends even into the kitchen of this contemporary Coralles home.

Look at the book-matched marble wall and the wood canopy over the island. When the kitchen is not being used, it can be viewed and appreciated as the merging of Art and Architecture – as striking as a gallery piece – and a key element in the overall architecture of the home.

A particularly ingenious floor plan allows for the clean, contemporary look of this main kitchen space. Where are the Sub-Zeros hiding? In the working pantry behind this main kitchen space, where the food is prepped. And the ovens? “Floating” side by side, easily accessible and complementary to the design. Behind the ovens is a wine cellar – integrated into the space yet with its own temperature controlled environment.

As is usually the case, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances are key to this kitchen plan - they deliver the desired performance and integrate smoothly into the design. The Wolf 48” rangetop is a powerful yet simple centerpiece for the cooking area, while Sub-Zero refrigerator drawers are built conveniently into the island. Separating the cooking, pantry and wine areas makes this space idea for entertaining, especially on those occasions where there are “too many cooks in the kitchen.”

“Modernism can have textural variety and warmth,” commented the Kitchen Design Contest judges about this Corrales kitchen, no doubt dazzled by its artistry. It would be hard to imagine a more beautiful blend of form and function. But then, New Mexico is the Land of Enchantment.
