Evesley House, Holland Place

Regional Award Winner KDC 2013-14

How do you design a kitchen for a client you’ve never met? If you’re Millgate, the quintessential British luxury home builder, you design to the high standard your reputation has earned for you.

For Evesley House, west of London near Reading, designer Theresa Williams considered who the prospective purchasers might be, and what they would be looking for: the ultimate in function and finishes, a scrupulous attention to detail, and – since this is, after all, England - a view to the gardens in back. The kitchen at Evesley House is the hub of the home, positioned in the large super-room together with the family and breakfast area. It has to suit a busy family lifestyle and be a great space to entertain friends and family. “I wanted to create a functional kitchen that would impress people,” says Theresa, “whether it is a client visiting the Showhome for the first time or a family who have moved in and are using the kitchen every day.” When you enter the large kitchen, your eyes are drawn to the large island, with its bold color and contrasting wooden breakfast bar, complimented with three simple yet elegant pendant shades hanging above. The main elevation of the space includes the Wolf 48” dual fuel range, with a striking mosaic backsplash and oak manteled traditional chimney detail. The run of full-height frosted wall units spans the full width of the kitchen, emitting a soft-lit glow throughout. The large-scale window positioned in the kitchen provides wonderful natural light and essential views to the garden.

The Sub-Zero refrigerators to the left of the main run are built into a full-length furniture piece, taking advantage of the high ceilings and providing an industrial look that contrasts nicely with the hand-painted cabinets and oak accents of the breakfast bar and mantle. Attention to detail is key, from the worktop edge to the lighting to the

red dials on the Wolf range. This is a kitchen to please any family – and apparently, almost any judge as well, for in addition to its recognition in the Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove Kitchen Design Contest, Evesley House won gold at the prestigious London Evening Standard Awards for “Best Luxury Development.”
