Traditional Kitchen

Regional Award Winner KDC 2010-12

Simple, charming detailing of early American farmhouses set the tone, but enhanced with modern amenities to make any busy and evolving family happy. The biggest design challenge was space!

The walls were set, so we had to fit many conveniences into one smaller, defined area and then balance the overall room for workflow and ease of use. Therefore, the layout has two sides. One is the efficient cooking area wrapped with appliance options for every cooking impulse. White painted wall-board helps create hidden storage and makes everything feel integrated. Useful spice niches line each side of the range, as does the pair of integrated refrigerator/freezers. A natural wood beam punctuates the hood to introduce some warmth and patina along with handmade, crackled tiles, and hand-forged iron hardware. The fry/steam section has a stainless steel surround for easy cleanup and the island top is butcher block, so everyone can help with the food prep. The opposite “side” is the more spacious gathering space with oiled soapstone countertops and refrigerator drawers that the kids can easily access. The kids line up every morning at their stools for cereal and every afternoon for after school snacks. Everyone always ends up in the kitchen!
