2019-2021 KDC Finalist
Transforming a new brownstone in Boston’s historic North End neighborhood meant combining elements of classic industrial warehouse vernacular with a modern New England aesthetic. Using authentic finishes such as gutsy, steel-framed windows and aged hickory plank floors, designer Bruce Kading was able to create a nuanced, timeless ambiance.

The luxurious finishes and top-quality appliances completed the look of this modern living environment. An integrated Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer are hidden behind custom ceruse oak paneling. A Wolf range is backed by an antique cast-iron fireplace fireback from 1788, and a 14-foot center island with a pewter countertop offers plenty of room for prepping and serving food. By taking cues from the colors and textures of the North End, Kading was able to achieve a cohesive, welcoming environment within the confines of the space.
