West Village Apartment

Regional Award Winner KDC 2013-14

Nothing creates a more striking kitchen than using a bold accent color. Especially when the client asks for red. Throw in a penthouse view of Manhattan’s West Village, and you’ve got the makings of a truly stunning renovation.

Architect Mark Stumer did have some challenges to overcome. The existing space has an imposing column at each end of the kitchen, and a large glass wall. He also had to work the red into a cohesive design, without letting it overwhelm the overall look.

He accomplished most of his objectives by creating a long narrow island and centrally locating most of the appliances in two opposite “appliance walls” – one containing a Wolf wall oven, microwave and warming drawer, while the other contains a full Sub-Zero refrigerator and refrigerator freezer side-by-side. Using stainless steel cabinetry around the appliances allows them to shine as an important element of the kitchen, complementing the high-gloss red panels. The centerpiece appliance is the Wolf 48” dual fuel range, selected not only for its great design, but also the cooktop options available.

The floor and lighting are clean, simple, unobtrusive. You’re captivated by the red accents, the shining appliances and of course, that million-dollar view.

Our Kitchen Design Contest judges’ comment? ‘RED HOT!”
