3rd Place Traditional Award KDC 2017-18
2017-2018 KDC Finalist

Cocooned under pines along the banks of a Floridian estuary, the Bayfront Rustic Hideaway emerges from a sea of green. Inside, designer Erika Powell created the kitchen of her clients’ dreams. As frequent dinner and cocktail party hosts, the homeowners required a kitchen that would accommodate a large guestlist. Dedicated to their functional needs, Powell was equally determined to produce an attractive, welcoming space that the owners and their guests couldn’t help but linger in.
Having previously owned Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, the clients felt there was no other option. Under the warm glow of a stunning metal hood cover, the 48” Wolf range awaits its orders. Behind the range, a butler’s pantry spans the entire length of the room, providing convenient preparation and storage space. In the main kitchen area, white quartzite countertops and two mirrored sinks offer guests and hosts the opportunity to mingle and cook together. Decentralized Sub-Zero refrigeration units placed throughout the space keep fresh foods at arm’s reach. Sub-Zero wine storage units in the bar area provide ample space for the client’s wine collection and centralizes the social action—eliminating the need for visits to a cellar or separate bar area. Continuing the theme of fluidity throughout the space, folding windows and doors connect the interior with the spacious covered porches that line the home’s perimeter.
While the soaring, cathedral ceiling creates a sense of gravitas, it posed a unique challenge to create an inviting space. Powell expertly counterbalanced the 34-foot ceilings with warm wooden floors and impressive light fixtures over the island. Ivory shiplap walls, exposed wooden beams, and natural stone provide a rustic feel, while the sage-colored cabinetry mimics the greenery outside. Warm metal fixtures add a finishing, welcoming touch. With every thoughtful detail, Powell curated a space that was beautiful yet functional, large yet approachable and warm.
